Gustav Mahler was a late-Romantic era composer born in Bohemia (present day Czech Republic) then later residing in Austria. He attended the Vienna Conservatory and began conducting, leading revolutionary changes in how the well-known music of opera (particularly Wagner) was interpreted and presented. He faced prejudice due his Jewish heritage and later converted to Roman Catholicism for political reasons. His compositions were mainly symphonies and leider. His 8th Symphony strove to show the symphony as an "entire world" and required over one thousand performers, instrumental musicians and singers alike.
